1891: The origins of COMSA

In 1891, the company "José Miarnau Navás Contratista de Obras", the origin of the current COMSA, was founded in Reus (Tarragona). From the beginning, it focused its activity on railway infrastructures.

20s

Railway specialisation

The company gained recognition and increased the portfolio of railway jobs. The construction of La Sagrera station is one of the most important works of its early years.

30s

Establishment in Barcelona

Under the command of the second generation, the company moved its headquarters to Barcelona. One of the most remarkable works during this stage is the construction of the workshops in Vilanova i la Geltrú.

40s

Civil engineering works

After the Spanish Civil War, the company participated in the reconstruction of Spain. Thus, the diversification of the company began with road and building projects. In this context, one of its first works is the suspension bridge of Amposta.

50s

Urban development of Barcelona

The industrial development of Catalonia enabled COMSA to participate in important urban development works in Barcelona, such as the expansion of its port or the creation of one of the main arteries of the city.

60s

Benchmark in railway renewal

The company carried out the automatic gauge change for the connection to the European network. Likewise, the diversification of the business consolidated with the construction of the first urban motorways.

70s

Territorial expansion

Between the 60s and 70s, the geographical expansion of COMSA began throughout Spain. Some important works here are the I Cinturón de Ronda de Barcelona or the double-track extension of the Sant Vicenç de Calders-Molins de Rei line.

80s

Modernisation of the Spanish road network

In 1982, COMSA developed the Rapid Track Renewal Train (TRR), the only one in Spain, which was a major technological innovation. In the 1980s, it consolidated its presence throughout the country with the modernisation of the Spanish road network.

90s

Start of internationalisation

Beginning of the internationalization in countries like Portugal, Argentina or Chile. COMSA participates in the construction of the first high-speed line in Spain (Madrid-Seville), inaugurated in 1992, and in projects related to the Olympic Games, such as the Palau Sant Jordi.

2000

Diversification of activity

With presence in ten countries, it diversified its activity towards sectors such as the environment, rail transport, renewable energies and concessions. In 2009 it joined EMTE, forming one of the main infrastructure and engineering groups.

2010-20

International consolidation

The international business grew, exceeding twenty countries and reaching half of the company's turnover. COMSA consolidates its position as a reference in the railway sector, both in Spain and internationally.
