The Termosolar Borges plant in Les Borges Blanques (Lleida), the first facility in the world that combines solar thermal energy and biomass, has begun installing the power generation turbine. This will allow production to start in October, thereby fulfilling the forecasts of COMSA EMTE and Abantia, the project partners.
The power generation turbine will be responsible for transforming steam produced from heat generated by the solar field and biomass boilers into electricity. The Termosolar Borges plant will run 24 hours a day, during daylight the solar thermal plant will operate, while at night the biomass plant will be responsible for generating electricity.
The Les Borges Blanques plant has an investment of 153 million euros and will export 22.5 MW of power, equivalent to the average consumption of more than 27,000 homes. The construction of the facility began in 2011 and it will become fully operational in December this year. Production of this type of clean energy will save 24,500 annual tonnes of CO2.
