Artur Mas opens solar plant at Les Borges Blanques

Artur Mas has opened the first solar plant in the world at Les Borges Blanques (Lleida) that combines solar and biomass technology. The President of the Generalitat de Catalunya highlighted “the courage of the project’s investors” and referred to its “innovative character that makes it a global reference point”.

The plant, owned by Abantia (47.5%), COMSA EMTE (47.5%) and the Institut Català d’Energia (5%), represents an investment of 153 million euros. Termosolar Borges will provide a continuous 100% renewable energy production of 98,000,000 KWh per year, equivalent to the average consumption of 27,000 Spanish households. The production of this type of clean energy means savings of 24,500 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

The hybridization model allows continuous energy generation, obtained using different methods depending on the time of day, the weather and the season. The 2,688 solar collectors are automatically positioned, according to the time and season, to capture energy during daylight hours. During times of low solar radiation, energy production is complemented by the biomass plant.
