On the 15th of March, the Gran Canaria Arena, a multipurpose hall with a maximum capacity for 10,000 spectators, built through a temporary joint venture lead by COMSA, opened in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The project cost 70 million Euros and took place over 23 months.
The Gran Canaria Arena has first class facilities for practising sports, with a modern basketball court, numerous changing rooms and multipurpose rooms, stands with collapsible seats, VIP and press areas, a space for events with a capacity for 4,000 people, carparks and a spectacular scoreboard, amongst other things. In addition to building the venue, COMSA has improved access to such, while EMTE has installed air conditioning facilities.
The sports hall will once again be the home turf of the local basketball team, Herbalife Gran Canaria, but is designed to hold large sporting events. Therefore, it will be one of the locations of the next basketball world cup which will be held inSpainin September and will organise the next edition of the 2015 basketball Copa del Rey. It is also designed to hold all types of cultural events, such as concerts and exhibitions, with a maximum capacity of 15,000 people.
The president of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, performed the official opening of the venue, in an event which included the participation of a delegation from COMSA, led by José Miarnau, CEO of COMSA EMTE.
