Barcelona City Council, through the Barcelona Municipal Markets Institute, has awarded COMSA the third and final phase of the redevelopment of Sants market, a contract worth 6.2 million Euros.
The work to be carried out by the construction company will involve fitting out the space, improving services and restoring the exterior of the historic Modernist market designed by Pere Falqués i Urpí. Once the improvement works have been completed, the market’s range of commercial services will include all the traditional stalls and a self-service area, as well as new facilities such as car parks and air-conditioning.
This final phase of the redevelopment of the emblematic market is expected to finish at the end of 2013. When work got under way in 2009 the business owners had to move to a provisional market, and their return to the original site will coincide with the celebration of its centenary.
