IPT, winner of an award for being one of the first companies with a “.es” domain

The Ministry of Industry has granted the company IPT recognition for being a pioneer in the registration of “.es” Internet domains. The telecommunications company of COMSA EMTE’s Engineering line of business won the award along with around a hundred companies, universities and public institutions across all the autonomous regions for being amongst the first 200 “.es” domains registered.

The Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, handed the award to Guillermo Lorenzo, Director of Engineering for COMSA EMTE. This tribute, considered to be the start of the commemorative activities to mark the 25th anniversary of the “.es” domain, was also attended by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications, Víctor Calvo Sotelo, and the Managing Director of Red.es, César Miralles. Amongst the pioneers awarded were companies like Telefónica I+D, Mapfre, Iberdrola, Seat, Indo and Danone, amongst others.

During the event, José Manuel Soria indicated that “.es” domains have gone from being a minority phenomenon to forming part of the professional and personal lives of the country’s citizens in record time. There are currently more than 1.7 million “.es” domains, 500,000 more than “.com” and they represent half the Internet domains in our country. The first “.es” domain which is still operational is www.iac.es, requested by the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics in the year 1991.
