COMSA signed yesterday the commencement of the construction of the new Abaceria Market, located in Barcelona’s Gràcia district, which will begin this week.
The project consists of the renovation of the historic market, which is surrounded by Travessera de Gràcia and the streets of Torrijos, Mare de Déu dels Desemparats and Puigmartí. The new Abaceria Market will be a 14,350 m2 building consisting of a ground floor, a mezzanine floor divided into two levels and three underground levels.
In addition, the comprehensive refurbishment of the building will enable it to become a sustainable market in accordance with the objectives of the climate emergency: clean energy generation facilities, insulation of equipment, waste recycling management and energy saving, among other elements. In this sense, the noble image of the roof will be recovered, making it compatible with a space for energy efficiency, alternating ceramic pieces and photovoltaic panels with the aim of generating energy without the need for large roofs or visually aggressive pieces.
This action represents an opportunity to preserve a neighbourhood market, dedicated to food and local, quality products, as well as to promote the structuring and social cohesion role played by this facility.
