Yesterday the inauguration of the Centre Penitenciari Obert de Tarragona (Tarragona Open Prison Centre), a project carried out by COMSA and COMSA Industrial, took place. The event was attended by the Minister of Justice, Gemma Ubasart; the Mayor of Tarragona, Pau Ricomà; and the President of Infraestructures de la Generalitat, Oriol Güell, among other authorities.
This is the first mixed open centre in Catalonia and is located in the Parc Francolí area, next to the Civil Guard headquarters in Tarragona. It has a surface area of 6,126 m2 and occupies four floors, with offices, common spaces, and has 68 double rooms and 5 single rooms adapted for people with reduced mobility, distributed in three modules (men, women and young people).
This is also the first facility built expressly to serve as an open centre in Catalonia, as the rest are ordinary penitentiary buildings that have been retrofitted at a later date. In addition, the centre incorporates energy improvements, such as the installation of photovoltaic panels for the production of electricity for self-consumption.
