COMSA presents the first results of a project to improve the properties of ballast in Japan

The director of COMSA’s Technical Area, Valentí Fontserè, was one of the speakers invited to the 9th edition of the High Speed World Congress, which was held from 7 to 10 July in Tokyo (Japan), presenting the preliminary results of an R&D project to improve the properties of rail ballast.

The objective of the project is to reduce the level of degradation of the ballast and attenuate the level of vibration and noise of the tracks. As Fontserè explained, the results of the first pilot tests show an improvement in the properties of the ballast, in comparison with its properties in natural conditions, in areas such as resistance to impact and abrasion, and in durability. Together, this would give the product a longer useful life and reduce maintenance.

The High Speed World Congress is one of the most important events worldwide in the high-speed sector. With an average attendance of a thousand professionals, the conference is a meeting point for political, economic and industrial leaders and international rail industry experts, where success stories related to the implementation of high-speed projects are discussed.

Led by COMSA, the project also involves the participation of Mapei and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. The initiative is part of the INNPACTO programme of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, which promotes collaboration between the public administration and private companies in R&D&i projects.
