COMSA to construct the Cícero-Colindres section of the Cantabrian Water Highway

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has awarded COMSA the contract for the construction of the Cícero-Colindres section of the Water Highway, a large aqueduct that will cross Cantabria from east to west to provide water to the entire coastal area of the region.

The project will link the eastern and central sections of Cantabrian water supplies, achieving an integrated operation of the entire system by allowing supply from the river Asón, the main source of water for the eastern coastal area, to any basin within the autonomous region.

The work, which COMSA will execute as part of a joint venture and which will last 17 months, will involve the construction of a new pipeline 8 kilometreslong, starting in the Ría de La Saca(La Saca estuary) and terminating at the existing storage tank in Colindres, where it will connect with the eastern section of the Water Highway and with the river Asón.

The infrastructure will guarantee the supply of water, especially during the summer, and will reduce the overexploitation of the Pas and Besaya rivers, ensuring the environmental flow of the rivers in an area that has been declared a Special Area of Conservation by the European Commission and is part of the Natura 2000 Network.
